Education:
Attended Loyola Marymount University in Los Angeles. Received a B.S. and J.D. degrees from Western State University School of Law and was admitted to the California Bar in 1983.
Professional Career:
After admission to the California Bar in 1983, John P. O’Connell went into private Civil Law Practice in Newport Beach, CA with a focus on Personal Injury and Business Law.
In 1987, John P. O’Connell became CEO and "in house" Counsel of a Southern California Floral Company developing Floral Marketing and Retail Operations for the Western United State’s Supermarket Industry. During the period of 1989 to 1999, John P. O’Connell introduced Cut Flower Supply Channels from Columbia and Ecuador to the Western United States Mass Market. In 1992, John P. O’Connell formed and headed up a Mexican Maquiladora Company, with operations in Tecate, Mexico under the United States/Mexico NAFTA Accord. The Tecate based Maquiladora imported cut flowers from Central and South America in to Mexico under bond for processing, finishing and shipment to the United States markets.
From 1992 to 1997, John P. O’Connell served on the Board of Directors of the Southern California Fresh Produce and Floral Council, a Southern California based trade Association. In 1996 to 1997, he served as President of the Association.
In 1997 to 1998, John P. O’Connell chaired a Political Action Committee to oppose and defeat Federal Legislation designed to impose an industry surcharge on all cut flower products imported and sold in the United States.
Besides the practice of Administrative law relevant to John P. O’Connell’s business and development projects, John P. O’Connell has represented other investment and business groups through the administrative law process of TUPS, CUPS, administration hearings and appeals.
From 1999-2005, John P. O’Connell acted as in-house counsel and principal in various commercial projects including real estate development and construction in Orange County, Riverside County, Kern County, San Diego County and Mexico. Other business projects during this period include development of an Automotive Center and Retail Operations throughout Southern California.
In 2005, John P. O’Connell went back into private law practice with the opening of offices in South Orange County and Temecula. John P. O’Connell’s practice today is a business law practice with emphasis on Business and Real Estate litigation, Business and Real Estate transactions, Bankruptcy, Tax, and Administrative law. John P. O’Connell’s client representation is strengthened and enhanced by 30 years of professional, business and investment experience.
John P. O’Connell lives in Murrieta with his wife Kathleen. They have 4 children and 4 grandchildren.
